Genre: Jazz-Rock, Fusion
Format: Eac/Ape/Cue/Full Covers

Of all the recording sessions completed by Miles Davis with his various bands, the sessions surrounding In a Silent Way Sessions in 1968 and 1969 are easily the most mysterious and enigmatic. For starters, they signified the completion of his transformation from acoustic to electric sound, and secondly, they marked the complete dissolution of the “second” quintet of Davis, Herbie Hancock, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter, and Ron Carter that had begun on Filles de Kilimanjaro. The addition of Chick Corea as a second keyboard player and the replacement of Ron Carter with Dave Holland had changed the sound of the band’s dynamic, textural, and rhythmic palettes. The final break with Davis’ own previous musical sound happened when he added guitarist John McLaughlin and keyboardist/composer Joe Zawinul (for a temporary three-keyboard sound). The music on the In a Silent Way Sessions comes packaged three ways, all of it chronologically ordered: there is the material used to finish Filles de Kilimanjaro (“Mademoiselle Maby” and “Freon Brun”); material that has been, up until now, unissued in any form; session outtakes that appeared, in edited form, on Circle in the Round, Water Babies, and Directions; unissued and rejected takes; and finally, the music recorded for In a Silent Way itself as it was rehearsed, played, and finally, heavily edited into the released album, which also appears here. This was an ambitious undertaking, even if it only covered six months in the recording life of Davis (September 1968 through February 1969), whose musical inspirations and directions were crisscrossing as they were changing direction. With the exception of one tune, Davis or Zawinul composed everything here. Zawinul, though a jazz veteran, was discovering new ways to write — particularly since the advent of the electric piano — and proved to be a profound influence on his employer. The other heavy influence on Davis during this volatile, fertile period was Tony Williams, who was soaking up the pop music of the day, from the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s album (via a girlfriend’s suggestion) to the in-his-prime James Brown, to Jimi Hendrix. On Disc One, the set begins with the missing tracks from the quintet box set: “Mademoiselle Mabry” and “Frelon Brun.” Hearing them in this context, as the first complete expressions of Davis’ new sound, is revelatory. For the first time the three-chord vamp in “Mademoiselle Mabry” comes across as the fitting tribute to Hendrix it should have been, echoing the turnaround tags in “The Wind Cries Mary.” These tracks mark the entrance of Dave Holland into the band and the first marked absence of Hancock. The contrast in styles, from Hancock’s chunky, groove-laden chords and single-note runs and Corea’s deep, cerebral spaciousness, is remarkable; it’s a wonder they were issued on the same record at all. The simple, slow-jam riff the former tune evokes was, in some way, the cornerstone on which the material for these sessions would be built, while the latter provided the space and pace for its establishment. On The Rise - Dream Zone (2009)

STYLE: AOR/Melodic Rock

BAND MEMBERS:
*Terje Eide – Lead Vocals, All Guitars, Keyboards, Bass & All Background Vocals
*Erik Engebretsen: drums
*Christian Wolff: Keyboards & Bass on 1, 2, 7, 10 & 12 / Lead Guitars on 2 & 10 / Acoustic Guitars on 10
*Eric Ragno: Piano & Keyboards on 1, 3, 4 & 11

Hailing from Bergen, Norway, Terje Eide (lead & background vocals, guitars) is the founder
and only member of ON THE RISE.
Terje first captured the public ear at age 16, as singer, guitarist and songwriter. His musical
career began in earnest a year later, through winning a local talent contest. He later enjoyed a
stint with the band Heaven & Hell, a rock institution in Bergen in the 80s. In 1986 he won the
Norwegian National Rock Championship on national TV with the band The Heat. He started his
own band a few years later.
Terje has spent several years exploring various musical genres, as well as playing with local
artists as a guitarist, singer and backup singer. This capacity landed him a variety of
large-scale shows and concerts, backing acclaimed Norwegian artists. Terje went back to his
Melodic Rock roots in 2000 starting a project who later on became ON THE RISE. A demo
was made in early 2001 which immediately raised the interest of Frontiers Records who signed
the project in June 2002.
Several rock magazines wrote that ON THE RISE created the melodic rock ultimate debut
album, boasting influences from the likes of Toto, Nelson and Boston with elements of the
typical Scandinavian melodic rock.
A few years later, Terje managed to put together the songs that are now on the long awaited
follow up album entitled “Dream Zone”. In Terje’s words “I’m very happy with the new album.
The songs are catchy, groovy and they’ve got the strong choruses and melody lines that I always
want them to have. It’s been a joyful musical journey. It’s an album I can support 110%. It’s got
the typical ON THE RISE sound, but at some point it’s a little rougher than what has been
written and produced before”.

Pat Metheny Albums

December 12th, 2009 by bboy

Pat Metheny is definitely my favorite jazz musician, probably my favorite any musician. I will try to make this topic the closest thing to his discography, uploading his solo albums, his many collaborations with various other jazz greats and, of course, his work with the Pat Metheny Group.

Pat Metheny Albums

Patrick Bruce Metheny (born August 12, 1954 in Lee’s Summit, Missouri) is an American jazz guitarist and composer.

One of the most successful and critically acclaimed jazz musicians to come to prominence in the 1970s and ’80s, he is the leader of the Pat Metheny Group and is also involved in duets, solo works, and other side projects. His style incorporates elements of progressive and contemporary jazz, post-Bop, jazz-rock fusion, and folk-jazz.

I have a lousy upload, but I’ll try to add at least one album daily. Any feedback is appreciated. Please don’t post your links here. No password.

Pat Metheny – Bright Size Life (1976)

Pat Metheny Albums

Pat Metheny’s debut studio album is a good one, a trio date that finds him already laying down the distinctively cottony, slightly withdrawn tone and asymmetrical phrasing that would serve him well through most of the swerves in direction ahead. His original material, all of it lovely, bears the bracing air of his Midwestern upbringing, with titles like “Missouri Uncompromised,” “Midwestern Nights Dream,” and “Omaha Celebration.” There is also a sole harbinger of radical matters way down the road with the inclusion of a loose-jointed treatment of Ornette Coleman’s “Round Trip/Broadway Blues,” proving that Song X did not come from totally out of the blue. Besides the debut of Metheny, this CD also features one of the earliest recordings of Jaco Pastorius, a fully formed, well-matched contrapuntal force on electric bass, though content to leave the spotlight mostly to Metheny. Bob Moses, who like Metheny played in the Gary Burton Quintet at the time, is the drummer, and he can mix it up, too. (AMG)

Jon Hopkins - Contact Note (2004) : Chillout

Review:

Londoner Jon Hopkins, 24, follows up is genre defining 2001 debut, Opalescent’, with the release of his new album ‘Contact Note’ in August 2004 through One World Music. This exciting exploration into delicate, melodic electronica confirms Planet Mixology’s 2001 prediction that Jon is “a genius in the making”. This new album will no doubt confirm that the genius is now made.

With 12 fresh new cuts ‘Contact Note’ delivers intricate beat patterns, driving basslines, guitar riffs, waving synths and ethereal vocals. Lushly produced and pristinely mixed ‘Contact Note’ gives an instant appeal to Jon’s music, from the intense ‘Circle’, the infectious ‘Symmetry’ and ’100′ drenched in beautiful vintage techno effects, to the melancholic piano of ‘Searchlight’ and the crystalline acoustic guitar of ‘Glasstop’.

Drawing on his time as a graduate from The Royal College of Music and collaborations with such musical luminaries as Brian Eno and Jeff Beck, Jon has delved further into his intense brand of epic electroinca and produced an album divided into three distinct movements. ‘Contact Note’ slowly evolves into a deep, compelling musical experience concluding with the stunning third part where he masters to perfection his skills as a classically trained musician, to give his most abstract work delicate impressionist touches.

Imelda May – Love Tattoo

November 20th, 2009 by bboy

Imelda May - Love Tattoo

Dubliner Imelda May has just released her first US album, Love Tattoo, and now Americans will be able to see why she has become the UK darling, even of such major tastemakers as Jools Holland. Love Tattoo is a surprisingly eclectic, big band affair where MayÂ’s impressive chops are clearly the star. Her moments of epic vocal maneuvers are paired with equally slinky occasions on the slower numbers, creating an impressive sampler of the many pleasures of her voice.

Love Tattoo opens with “Johnny Got a Boom Boom”, a blues-guitar driven number in which May’s vocal phrasing is lightning-quick and punctuated with brass accents. Vocally, KT Tunstall would be an apt comparison, at least on the album’s faster numbers. May’s howl and the sudden surf-rock bridge are all her own, though, and the way May howls, “He’s gonna freak you out!” makes freaking out sound positively festive. “Johnny Got a Boom Boom” is followed by the similarly rowdy “Feel Me”. The brass and big-band influences are, pardon the pun, in full swing by now, complete with jazzy piano fills.
“Knock 123” is a sudden change into full-on sultry, slow-burn seduction. “Knock 123 on the wall,” she instructs her secret lover as their secret code. A creeping bassline augments the languor in May’s buttery voice as she watches her lover across a room and muses on her desire. Her ballad-voice doesn’t quite match the more complex sultriness of singers like Eleni Mandell or Lhasa de Sela, but it’s damn convincing..

“Wild About My Lovin’” attempts to combine the lust of the previous track with the high energy of the album’s first two songs. This song is not delivered quite as convincingly, with May’s vocals lacking the pyrotechnics she shows off on “Johnny Got a Boom Boom”. There is more surf-rock, though, fear not. “Big Bad Handsome Man” is a piano-and-brass-driven big band number. “He’s my big band handsome man / He’s got me in the palm of his hand,” May sings amid soaring trumpets. This is a fine moment to acknowledge the musicianship of May’s collaborators—it’s not many vocal-driven artists who can successfully showcase superb guitarists, pianists, and trumpeters.

“Love Tattoo” finds May back in Tunstall-esque territory. Her trademark fast phrasing and spiraling delivery make this an easy, highly danceable number. “Meet You at the Moon” is another smoky, slow number. This one is songbook-classic and made for dancing in a period-accurate. By the time “Smokers’ Song” comes around, though, May’s quick, big band songs are beginning to blur together. Her lyrics aren’t memorable enough to prevent this phenomenon, and she also doesn’t fight it with unexpected instrumentation or skillful use of negative space. Fortunately, “Smotherin’ Me” is a standout track. “Can’t even breathe when I’m with you,” May sings exasperatedly before panting heavily into the microphone. Her vocals even reach Janis Joplin-territory on a few occasions in this song.

“Falling in Love With You Again” is another of her classic piano lounge numbers, though soft, steady percussion provides an excellent counterpoint to May’s high-femme vocals. “I loved you from the start / But now I love you with all my heart / Cause I’m fallin in love with you again,” May sings as the brass enters more gently than before. There’s nothing new about this song or May’s performance of it, but it’s a very pleasant choice for listeners wanting a neo-40’s love song.

“It’s Your Voodoo Working” is May’s clever narrative of a woman on whom the famed mojo is working. “It’s your voodoo workin and I can’t get enough,” May faux-protests, making this one of the catchier up-tempo numbers from the album. “Watcha Gonna Do” is another one, featuring the more gravely ends of May’s range and relentless delivery as an electric guitar manufactures an industrial edge beneath May’s croons, whimpers, and screams.

May is definitely a talent, and her voiceÂ’s versatility proves that. Hopefully as her career progresses, sheÂ’ll make each track as good as the best on this album.
